CALL FOR PAPERS
CATTW/ACPRTS ANNUAL CONFERENCE
24, 25, 26 MAY 2001
Université Laval, Quebec, Canada

CATTW/ACPRTS invites proposals for 20-minute research papers for
its 2001 Annual Conference.
Several areas of interest have been identified as session themes:

 Language, Culture and Society: Text in Social Context,
 Communicators as Cultural Interpreters, and
 Research Funding and Grant Applications.

However, proposals for papers on other topics related to technical
and professional writing
are also welcome.  All proposals for research papers should clearly
establish the research
focus and context of the work.

Language, Culture and Society: Text in Social Context

This session comes under the umbrella of one of this year's shared
Congress themes:
Language, Culture and Society. Participants are invited to present
papers that explore
the roles of texts in various social contexts. Possible topics include
the production of
texts in response to certain rhetorical situations; communities of
practice and texts they use;
texts as sites of social conflicts, and social constructionist
analysis of texts.
These are just some of the considerations that researchers are invited
to address in an
exploration of texts in social contexts.

Communicators as Cultural Interpreters

A proposed joint session with the Canadian Association for
Translation Studies.

This session will address issues related to the role of professional
communicators,
translators and interpreters in an increasingly global economy.
Researchers are invited to explore issues of globalization and
localization in writing,
translation, and interpretation, in English, in French and in
languages and language
combinations other than English and French. Some of the possible
questions
to be discussed in
this session are: Canadian context: what challenges does it present for
professional
communicators, translators and interpreters? Thinking internationally:
what does it mean for a professional communicator and for a translator?
How do professional communicators and translators deal with
intercultural
differences in texts and in contexts? How can we integrate an
international
perspective
into the classroom?

Roundtable: Research Funding and Grant Applications

Research Funding and Grant Applications is the theme of our roundtable
discussion this year.
Participants are invited to discuss possible sources of research funding
in the area of
technical and professional communication, strategies for obtaining
research funding,
rhetorical approaches to writing successful grant applications and other
issues related to
the proposed theme.

PANELS, WORKSHOPS AND INFORMAL SESSIONS
We invite participation in panels, workshops, and informal sessions.
We also invite proposals for informal sessions dealing with teaching and
practice of translation and technical and professional communication.
Although they need not be based on formal research, these sessions
should
reflect
current research and should foster discussion and the exchange of ideas
and experiences.
Proposals in this category could take the form of individual
presentations,
panels or roundtables.

Please submit 250-word proposals for formal papers to the program chair
by
September 30, 2000.
E-mail submissions are strongly encouraged.

Presenters must be CATTW members.

To encourage and promote research by young scholars, CATTW will provide
modest travel
subsidies to graduate students who present or co-present papers at the
conference.
Note: The issue of CATTW presenters' eligibility for travel funding
under
the
Aid to Occasional Research Conferences program is being investigated.
If such funding is indeed available, only presenters whose proposals are
received
before October 1 would be eligible for it. Members will be updated on
this situation in
the coming months.

L'ACPRTS sollicite des propositions de communications d'une durée de
vingt
minutes pour présentation lors de son prochain congrès annuel, en 2001,
colloque prenant place au sein du Congrès des sciences sociales et
humaines.
Voici les thèmes retenus pour cette rencontre :

. Langue, culture et société : le texte et son contexte social
. Les communicateurs, des médiateurs culturels
. La recherche de fonds et les demandes de subventions

Les propositions de communication portant sur d'autres sujets reliés au
domaine de la rédaction technique et scientifique sont également
bienvenues.
Chaque proposant doit faire ressortir clairement la recherche sur
laquelle s'appuie
sa proposition de communication et le contexte dans lequel cette
recherche
s'inscrit.

Langue, culture et société : le texte et son contexte social

Cette thématique est en lien avec l'un des thèmes rassembleurs suggérés
par
la Fédération canadienne des sciences humaines et sociales en 2001, soit
Langue, culture et société.  Voici, à titre suggestif, quelques sujets
pouvant s'y rattacher : l'influence de la situation de communication sur
le texte;
communités discursives et genres privilégiés; le texte comme objet de
conflits
socio-culturels et l'approche socio-constructiviste en analyse de texte.
D'autres sujets relie au thème de la session de communications sont
également bienvenues.

Les communicateurs, des médiateurs culturels

Cette thématique fera l'objet d'une session de communications conjointe
avec l'Association canadienne de traductologie. La session sera
l'occasion
d'examiner divers aspects du rôle des communicateurs, des traducteurs et
des
interprètes dans un contexte d'économie mondiale. Parmi les sujets
possibles
reliés à cette thématique, nous suggérons: Quels défis particuliers le
contexte
canadien pose-t-il aux communicateurs, traducteurs et interprètes?
Penser
globalement:
qu'est-ce que cela signifie dans la pratique d'un communicateur ou d'un
traducteur?
Comment gérer les différences culturelles dans les textes et les
contextes
de communication?
Comment introduire une perspective culturelle internationale dans une
classe?

Table ronde: la recherche de fonds et les demandes de subventions

Les membres de l'ACPRTS/CATTW sont invités à participer à une discussion
sur:
les sources de financement de la recherche en communication
professionnelle
et technique;
les stratégies gagnantes pour obtenir des fonds et les argumentaires les
plus
efficaces dans ce genre d'écrits, parmi d'autres sujets reliés au thème
de
la table ronde.

Tables rondes, ateliers et séances informelles

Nous vous invitons à participer à des tables rondes, à des ateliers et à
des séances
informelles. Nous invitons également les membres à soumettre des
propositions
pour
des séances informelles portant sur l'enseignement et la pratique de la
communication
technique et professionnelle. Les propositions soumises dans le cadre de
ces séances
ne s'appuient pas nécessairement sur des recherches formelles, mais
elles
doivent s'inscrire
dans le courant actuel des recherches et favoriser l'échange d'idées et
d'expériences entre
les membres. Ces propositions peuvent prendre la forme de présentations
individuelles ou de
tables rondes.

Veuillez faire parvenir votre proposition de communication d'environ
250 mots d'ici
le 30 septembre 2000 à la responsable du programme.

Nous vous invitons tout particulièrement à le faire
par courrier électronique. Nous vous rappelons, enfin,
qu'il faut être membre de l'ACPRTS pour présenter une communication.

Dans le but d'encourager la recherche chez les jeunes chercheurs,
l'ACPRTS offre aux étudiants de deuxième et de troisième cycles qui
présenteront ou coprésenteront une communication au congrès une modeste
somme pour les aider à couvrir leurs frais de déplacement.

À noter que des
démarches ont été entreprises par le comité exécutif de l'Association
auprès du
CRSH pour obtenir le remboursement des frais de voyage de toutes les
personnes
qui
présentent une communication et en feraient la demande. Tous les membres
de
l'ACPRTS/CATTW
seront informés du résultat de cette opération dans les mois qui
viennent.
Il est important
de noter qu'advenant une réponse favorable du CRSH, vous ne serez
admissible
à une aide financière que si votre proposition de communication aura été
reçue
avant le 1er octobre 2000.
