Of course the on-line third-party course is a bad idea. It pushes the
students outside their learning context exactly when they need to be
brought in. I think your suggestion of a WAC approach makes much more
sense.
What we find -- with a very different clientele, but who have similar
distrust of the word -- is that timing is key to the strategy for
motivating and working with students. You'll need to work closely with
the Foundation course professor to integrate writing workshops that are
clearly targeted to the students' needs at that particular time. This
makes developing a coherent writing package very difficult unless the
professor is willing to create a set of carefully sequenced assignments
that you can have some input one to shape in ways productive for
teaching students the rhetorical tools you're hoping to help them
develop.
