Thanks, special thanks, to Rob and Marcy, also Kenna and Russ. This sort of
dialogue is important so that we won't succumb to the fear that is likely
going to be surrounding us. Likewise, what all of you out there are doing is
important--encouraging dialogic thought and expression. So keep it up , you
wonderful people.
I myself don't think I want to put my energy into a letter to National
Post readers. I wouldn't know how to begin to answer that sort of ____. But
more power to you if you do, Kenna.
As we grieve the horrible loss of life during the past week, many of us
are afraid of the kinds of reactions Kenna, Marcy, and Rob cited. Thus,
it's more important than ever that we encourage and support one another.
Best wishes,
Roberta

This letter appeared in today's Globe and Mail. It draws on an article
in yesterday's paper, but explains that context well enough. I think the
connection it makes between the "belief" of terrorists and the rhetoric
of Bush is quite chilling.

The Aftermath Comment Good and
evil

Ottawa -- Terrorism expert Mark Juergensmeyer says
the
terrorists he has met "seemed not only normal but
pleasant, affable with above-normal intelligence."
What
made them different was the fact that "they believed
they
were part of a titanic struggle between good and
evil"
(Twisted View Of The World Drives Some To Mass
Murder
-- Sept. 13).
George W. Bush is preparing for war against
terrorism and
believes "this will be a monumental struggle of good
versus evil, but good will prevail." We can only
pray that
the U.S. President and his advisers will rise above
this
simplistic view. Otherwise, the cycle of hatred and
terror
will only expand.
