Title
Pairing Courses Across the Disciplines: Effects on Student Writing
Performance
Abstract
This presentation focuses on a project concerned with identifying more
effective ways for students to create documents that
contain usable, professional arguments. Our four-year collaboration as
teachers and researchers with a learning community
provided an opportunity to compare "before" and "after" versions of a
complex technical report produced by student teams for
a workplace client. The "before" versions are drawn from a
stand-alone,
communication-intensive course. The "after" versions
are drawn from a learning community that paired a technical course in
agronomy with a communication course. This pairing
enabled the teachers to integrate these two upper-level courses in
complex ways-by co-developing and co-assigning several
assignments, providing cross-disciplinary feedback on selected
assignments, sharing and exchanging class times when
necessary to meet integration goals, and attending and participating
in
one another's classes. The presentation focuses on the
results of the "before" and "after" comparison.
