I was a trustee of a nursing home here in my home town of CAMBRIDGE for
some twenty years it was started off in 1965 with a donation of $1000 from
the local lion's club it is run as a charitable trust with the trustees
appointed from local groups but is primarily a lion's club project.. We now
have a asset worth over $ 10,000,000. .Over the years we have had people
leaving the trust generous legacies. This has enabled the trust to expand to
the point today where it has over 40 cottages a large resthome and a 30 bed
hospital.
The emphasis is on providing a caring atmosphere this is helped by a
team a volunteers who supplement the staff and provide those little extras
such free entertainment taking residents out on trips and regular visiting
to those residents who have no one. Perhaps as an indicator that it is a
pleasant and caring place to spend their last years there are several
residents over 100 and the average age in the home is now over 90.
In New Zealand the government will pay for those who have no means to pay
themselves.
