A2A Update, November 2003

The A2A database at http://www.a2a.org.uk was updated on 12 November.  The
database now contains 5.7 million catalogue entries describing archives held
in 335 record offices, libraries and other repositories throughout England.
The update included the first catalogues from 3 current projects.  Among
these were finding aids describing the following:
* archives of pre-nationalisation gas companies based across England, held
by Transco plc's National Gas Archive in Warrington, with archives of
businesses and estates in the North West held by the local authority
archives services of Cumbria, Greater Manchester and Rochdale, submitted by
the regional project Mills, Mansions and Corner Shops;
* deeds and local history notes amassed by the nineteenth-century local
historian Percy Woods, held at Godalming Museum; and texts of lectures by
the classical philosopher and Professor of Greek, Dorothy Tarrant, and the
research papers of Caroline Spurgeon, Professor of English Literature, held
at Royal Holloway, University of London, submitted by Private Faces in
Public Places (a South East Region project);
* archives relating to the South Yorkshire coal industry, including archives
of the National Union of Miners and papers of Samuel Lawrence, colliery
manager, held at Barnsley Archives and Local Studies and at Doncaster
Archives Department, contributed by Shafts of Light.
The update also included further catalogues from the following current
projects:
* Aladdin's Cave and Local Governance and the Community, in South East
England;
* Broad Acres, Big Houses, Yorkshire People;
* Communities in the Records, in the East of England;
* Cosmic Rays and the Solid State, and South West Family Fortunes, in South
West England;
* Families, Estates and Communities, in the East Midlands;
* More than Meets the Eye, at Greater Manchester County Record Office;
* Parishes and People, at Cambridgeshire County Record Office, Huntingdon;
* Saints and Sinners, in London and the South East.
More 'born digital' finding aids and catalogues of public records held
locally were also added this month, including catalogues describing
regimental archives held at Staffordshire Regiment Museum (including papers
relating to Major Robert Cain VC who was recently featured on television),
and archives of north London hospitals held at the Royal Free Hospital
Archives Centre.
A2A has a new web address - http://www.a2a.org.uk.  Please start to use this
URL, pass on the news and update any web links or publicity material you may
have.  The former URL will be withdrawn at some point next year.
Lastly, A2A usage since launch now stands at 2.5 million searches and 5.2
million catalogue downloads.
A2A is the English strand in the UK archives network: its database at
www.a2a.org.uk already contains the electronic equivalent of over 400,000
catalogue pages describing archives held across England in national, local
and specialist repositories and dating from the 700s to the present day.
The A2A programme will make a further 300,000 catalogue pages available on
the web by March 2004.
