Quoting Russ Hunt <[log in to unmask]>:
Peter Kincaid -- originator of the Flesh-Kincaid readability index on which all
grammar checker's have been based -- was a keynote speaker at the IEEE
Professional communication conference in September. When a young woman gushed
about how much she appreciated his work and how it was so helpful to students,
he quipped back, in his Louisiana drawl, "Well, nothing's gonna replace a good
reader reading a document."
Russ is onto something here. Notice the placement of the most controversial
information in the opening prepositional phrase, an attempt it would seem to
naturalize or normalize testing.
