I wasnīt talking about the rate of success of DBS which, I hope is higher than
15%.
It is estimated, by the people performing it, that DBS can benefit about 15%
of PWPs.
At first (about 10 years ago) they operated mainly on advanced cases of PD and
on older people. They found that some of these older people had more
cognitive problems after their DBS. Now they tend to operate younger PWPs and
not beyond the age of 70. Also, the tendency is to operate earlier in the
development of the disease. Before, it was performed once all the drugs had
been tried and when secondary effects were too invalidating.
They found out that by screening the PWPs more carefully, the results were
better.
I donīt know exactly what tests are used but a careful evaluation of the
cognitive ( memory, etc) state is done befrorehand.
