LIMTED TERM LECTURER

The Centre for Writing-Intensive Learning (CWIL) invites applications for
two full-time limited term lecturers to participate in the development and
implementation of writing-intensive (W) courses across disciplines at Simon
Fraser University. This initiative is part of a broader undertaking
concerning new undergraduate requirements (effective September 2006) in
areas of writing, quantitative reasoning, and breadth
(see http://www.sfu.ca/ugcr ) These positions will be attractive to dynamic
individuals with a strong background in rhetoric and composition and faculty
in-service development.  Demonstrated success in and commitment to
consultative approaches are essential. The successful applicants for these
positions will possess excellent communication and training skills.

SETTING

CWIL is a recently established centre currently attached to the Dean of Arts
and Social Sciences at Simon Fraser University, a comprehensive university
with approximately 16,000 FTE students spread across three campuses in
Burnaby, Surrey, and Vancouver. CWIL works closely with many others engaged
in the new curriculum, in areas as diverse as student support, faculty
development, and pedagogical assessment.

CWIL itself currently has 3 faculty members, including the director, a
departmental assistant, and a variety of part-time and temporary help from
research assistants, consultants, and work-study students.  (See

ASSIGNMENT

Using a collegial and consultative approach, CWIL has a mandate to assist
all university departments and faculty in developing strategies for the
teaching of writing in the discipline, in course/assignment planning and
design and in the implementation of writing as a means of learning.  CWIL
faculty arrange discussions with departments and individuals, collaborate in
preparing course syllabi, meet regularly during the semester with both the
instructor and any TAs assigned to a W course, help to prepare materials as
needed, and generally serve in a consultative and supportive role.  We
develop workshops on a variety of topics and invite broad participation as a
means of creating communities of people interested in teaching writing.  In
addition, we are building a comprehensive website, a bibliography on a
searchable database, and a library of materials for faculty (and in some
cases extra-SFU) use. As assigned by the Director, individual faculty
members may take on additional special projects

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:
. MA (PhD preferred) in composition, rhetoric, genre theory or related
fields - consideration will be given to those with a graduate degree (PhD
preferred) in another discipline but who also have extensive experience in
composition and rhetoric.
. familiarity with university academic environments
. successful experience in teaching academic/university writing
. successful experience in teaching others to teach writing
. ability to develop instructional materials
. ability to provide training and mentoring to faculty, TAs or others who
have a role in the teaching of W courses
. excellent written and verbal skills in English
. exceptional communication and interpersonal skills


Preferred:
. a background or experience of working in the sciences and/or applied
sciences


APPOINTMENT
Appointments will be made to an academic home department but duties
fulfilled within the Centre for Writing-Intensive Learning.  Simon Fraser
