The Faculty of Communication and Culture invites applications for a
tenure-track assistant professor position in the public communication of
science and technology. This position is a joint appointment with the
Faculty's program in Communications Studies and the Faculty of Science's
Natural Sciences Program. The position will begin July 1, 2006. The
successful candidate should hold a PhD and have strong publication
record in recognized journals, and be capable of obtaining
peer-reviewed, competitive research funding.
Public Communication of Science and Technology:
The Faculty of Communication and Culture is a dynamic faculty dedicated
to innovative, interdisciplinary teaching and research at the graduate
and undergraduate levels. Teaching duties will include graduate and
undergraduate courses in both the Communications Studies Program and in
the Natural Sciences Program. The candidate may also anticipate
involvement with the Faculty of Communication and Culture's Science,
Technology and Society Program.
The Natural Sciences Program is an undergraduate program that draws
expertise from across the Faculty of Science. It differs from
traditional, departmentally based programs by offering students greater
flexibility and an unparalleled opportunity to tailor the focus of their
education. It attracts more first-year students than all but one of the
departmentally based programs and courses offered directly by the
Program emphasize interdisciplinary inquiry, communication and
scientific literacy.
The candidate should be conversant with theories, policies, and practice
on publics and science. Competencies in any of these areas will be
valuable: health communications, environmental communications, risk
communications, science and technology issues and media coverage,
publics, communication, and innovation. The university's affiliation
with multi-sector research consortia including The Centre for Innovation
Studies and the Canadian Science and Innovation Indicators Consortium
provide opportunities for fruitful teaching and research partnerships
with industry and the community.
We are seeking a committed scholar who can develop an active research
program, supervise graduate students, thrive in an interdisciplinary
teaching and research environment, and be confident in working across
Faculties. Candidates should also be willing to integrate learning
technologies into their teaching plans. In accordance with Canadian
