(My apologies for the multiple postings, those of you who are also on the CATTW
list.)
Applications are invited for the following position:
Lecturer, Office of English Language and Writing Support, School of Graduate
Studies, University of Toronto
The School of Graduate Studies at the University of Toronto invites
applications for a two-year full-time position at the rank of Lecturer in The
Office of English Language and Writing Support (ELWS). The successful
applicant may be cross appointed either to the Department of English or to the
Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE), depending on qualifications.
While the cross appointment will connect the candidate to a larger community of
scholars, all of his/her teaching will be in ELWS. This appointment begins on
August 1, 2006 and ends on July 31, 2008. ELWS offers a range of non-credit
courses, workshops, and individual consultations designed to help graduate
students develop the written and oral communication skills needed for graduate
study. Descriptions of this term’s offerings can be found on the ELWS website
at www.sgs.utoronto.ca/english.
Qualified applicants will possess a Ph.D. in a relevant field, commitment to
research-based pedagogy, and a record of excellence in teaching at the
university level. Other requirements include the ability to work
collaboratively and harmoniously with a range of colleagues, knowledge of
culture- and discipline-specific rhetorical strategies, strong organizational
skills, the ability to identify and solve curriculum delivery challenges, and
the creativity and initiative needed to design innovative instructional
materials. The successful candidate will teach courses/workshops to advanced
graduate students in at least three of the following areas: Academic Writing
for Native or Non-native Speakers of English; Proposal Writing; Scientific
Writing; Pronunciation; Academic Conversation Skills for Non-native Speakers of
English; and Oral Presentation Skills. In addition to teaching, the successful
candidate will assist the Director of ELWS with specific administrative duties
such as scheduling courses and instructors, distributing information to
graduate units, counseling students, and organizing instructors’ meetings.
The application deadline is June 14, 2006. Applicants should send a letter of
application outlining their suitability to teach in ELWS, a curriculum vitae,
at least three submissions from their teaching portfolio (e.g. a statement of
teaching philosophy, course syllabi, sample course materials, teaching
evaluations, etc.), and should arrange to have three confidential letters of
recommendation sent on their behalf to Dr. Jane Freeman, Director of the Office
of English Language and Writing Support, University of Toronto, 63 St. George
Street, M5S 2Z9.
The University of Toronto is strongly committed to diversity within its
community and especially welcomes applications from visible minority group
members, women, Aboriginal persons, persons with disabilities, members of
sexual minority groups, and others who may contribute to the further
diversification of ideas. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply;
however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.
