Faculty Position
School of Linguistics and Applied Language Studies (SLALS)
Carleton University invites applications for the position of Director,
School of Linguistics and Applied Language Studies (SLALS), effective
July 1, 2007. Applicants must have a Ph.D., a strong academic record in
Theoretical Linguistics, Applied Language Studies, Applied Linguistics
or a related area, and demonstrated administrative abilities. The
Director, who will be appointed at the Associate Professor or Professor
rank, will provide leadership to the School. SLALS is a large academic
unit with undergraduate degree programs in both theoretical and applied
linguistics, a certificate program in teaching English as an additional
language, and a Master's program in Applied Language Studies. The School
also has a credit ESL program and is responsible for teaching a range of
modern languages and courses in professional communication. The
ancillary unit, which is income-generating, houses the non-credit ESL
program, the Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) Assessment, and a
range of special projects relating to language teaching and learning.
Candidates for the position of Director should have a track record of
demonstrated excellence in teaching and research, as well as substantial
experience managing a diverse and complex academic unit. All qualified
applicants are encouraged to apply. However, in accordance with Canadian
immigration requirements, in the case of equally qualified candidates,
preference is given to Canadian citizens and landed immigrants. The
application should include a statement of educational philosophy, a
current curriculum vitae, and samples of research publications. Letters
of reference from three referees are required. These should be addressed
