there is a lively discussion underway on the complexities of writing academic texts for L2 writers connecting a variety of topics such as writing centre practice, genre, cultural contexts, research methods, etc on the EATAW list (European Association of Teachers of Academic Writing - with members from around the world). There are many references through the discussion to research and sources that you might find useful.
