Center for Research in Festive Culture
Seminars, Fall 2008:
Religion and Festivity
April, 2008
Dear Colleagues:
The schedule for next year’s Center for Research in Festive Culture
(CRFC) seminars at the Newberry Library, Chicago, IL, is now complete.
In each case two papers will be discussed, having been circulated to
correspondents of the Center one month in advance. In the case of the
second date below, however, application for a seminar presentation by a
junior scholar remains open. In fact, since time is getting short, and
your summer research plans are probably taking shape, the Center will
welcome work on any festive-cultural subject, not just on religion and
festivity. I also look forward to hearing from anyone who may have in
mind a beginning professor or doctoral student who has finished her or
his research whom I might contact about this opening.
This problem has arisen partly because, while some scholars wrote about
their intention to submit papers, they have not yet sent their one-page
curriculum vitae and one-page synopsis of the intended paper. These two
items remain indispensable for an invitation from the Center. Limited
funds for travel to Chicago will be available, as is help with lodging
and meals.
Here is the schedule at present:
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 26, 2:00-5:00 P.M.
Hélène Bellour, Private Scholar: From East Indian to Black Indian: The
Life and Works of a Twentieth-Century Carnival Performer in Trinidad
Katherine Wright, Northern Illinois University, De Kalb, IL: Greek
Orthodox Easter in Present-Day Greece: Rituals and Fireworks
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 10, 2:00-5:00 P.M.
Martin Walsh, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor: Martinje: Mock Bishops,
New Wine, and Liturgical Parody in Contemporary Zagreb
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 2:00-5:00 P.M.
