Dear Inkshedders:
It's almost the season to say welcome back to Fall term. There are times
when I'm very glad I'm retired. This blog post was mentioned in the New
York Times, meaning that it might get picked up elsewhere. I hope you
don't get it thrown at you without warning.
It turns up an old argument by summarizing a recent article in the
International Journal of English Education claiming that students revise
more in response to comments made by a "robo-reader" than to instructor
(TA?) comments. No examples or data are offered, only instructor
testimonials.
One assumption here is that human instructors always make "red-pen"
impersonal judgemental comments. Writing quality is also (still)
measured in terms of length and correct grammar. There's lots more to
say about this topic!
Best,
Margaret Procter
(retired) University of Toronto Coordinator, Writing Support.
