The claim that blanket-tossing was used to induce labor was originally made, I
believe, by Claude Chidamian, "Mak and the Tossing in the Blanket," Speculum,
22 (1947), 186-90. However, I seem to recall a note--perhaps in N&Q--disputing
the claim. I haven't a clue to the date, assuming this note exists, except
that it would have been within the past 10 years.
