Hope some of you will be able to make it to CWSA June 7-9, usually a good
time of year to see whales, icebergs, puffins and perhaps even some spring
weather. The overall theme of next year's Learneds is _Communications_,
and the theme chosen by the Humanities and Social Sciences Federation of
Canada (HSSFC) for featured speakers, interdisciplinary events and so
forth is _Literacies /Communication: The 21st Century_. Some funding is
available from HSSFC for joint sessions: let me know if you have any
suggestions. Here is the information that went out to CWSA members.

CANADIAN WOMEN'S STUDIES ASSOCIATION

CALL FOR PRESENTATIONS AND PAPERS for the CWSA Annual Conference in
conjunction with the Learned Societies Memorial University of
Newfoundland, June 7-9, 1997

Literacies and Communication across Difference: Rewriting Women's Studies
for the Millennium

The challenges facing women's studies have never been greater, as we
struggle to maintain the ground we have won, to build stronger links among
the diverse group of women who support the work of our organization, and
to travel beyond where we have already been. Memorial University invites
you to the far eastern rim of the continent to share, celebrate and
interrogate our triumphs and aspirations, and to continue the ongoing work
of women's studies. The organizing committee invites proposals for
individual or group presentations, in English or French, from students,
faculty, independent researchers, activists, performers, community groups,
government agencies, retirees, and others interested in issues that
concern women.

In addition to traditional academic papers, we welcome workshops,
roundtable discussions, and presentations featuring film, drama, music,
posters, visual arts and more. We want the sessions to reflect the
richness and complexity of women's studies, not only as an academic
discipline, but also as political engagement, as empowerment and as a way
to explore new territory and new forms of discourse. We urge you to
submit proposals that relate in some way to the conference theme, but
other topics are also welcome.

Please complete the forms below and return to:

The committee also welcomes recommendations for special sessions, such as
book launches, joint speakers with other sessions, keynote speakers,
performers. . . especially if accompanied by suggestions for sources of
funding. Please contact Phyllis or one of the other members of the
organizing committee as soon as possible with such suggestions. The other
committee members are
