CALL FOR PAPERS
CATTW/ACPRTS ANNUAL CONFERENCE
MAY 25, 26, 27, 2000
UNIVERSITY OF ALBERTA, EDMONTON, ALBERTA, CANADA

CATTW/ACPRTS invites proposals for 20-minute presentations of
research papers for its year 2000 Annual Conference.
The session themes are Rhetorical Approaches to
Workplace and Academic Communications; the Role of
Feedback in Technical Communications; and Visual Aids in
Professional Presentations.
However, proposals for papers on other topics
related to technical and professional writing are also welcome.
All proposals for research paper presentations should
clearly establish the research focus and context of the work.

Rhetorical Approaches to Workplace and Academic Communication

A joint session with the Canadian Society for the Study of Rhetoric

Under this broad theme, participants are invited to
present papers on issues that involve the exploration
of rhetorical approaches to teaching and
researching technical and professional communication
in workplace and academic settings.
This theme encompasses topics such as rhetorical
approaches used in technical communication research,
the relationship between research methodologies and their
impact on the practice of technical communication, and the
integration of recent theoretical developments into
technical communication pedagogy in different institutional,
linguistic and disciplinary settings. These are just some
of the considerations that researchers are invited to address
in an exploration of the rhetorical approaches to
workplace and academic communication.

The Role of Feedback in Technical Communication

What is feedback? Who provides feedback in the classroom
and in the workplace?
How is it provided and used in these two settings?
How is feedback perceived by those who give and those who
receive it both in
the workplace and the classroom?
How do we bring together academic and workplace perspectives on
feedback?
Researchers are invited to address these and other issues
related to the role of feedback in technical and
professional communication.

Visual Aids in Professional Presentations

What are the effects of rapidly changing technologies on the way
visual aids are used in professional presentations? How do we
address issues related to the use of visual aids in technical
communication
classrooms? How can we prepare our students for the transition from the
often inadequately equipped reality of academia to the high-tech
workplace?
How are new technologies used in professional presentations
in different technical fields?

ROUNDTABLES, WORKSHOPS AND INFORMAL SESSIONS

We invite participation in roundtables, workshops,
and informal sessions.
Technology, Language, and Society: Teaching Technical and Professional
Writing in the New Millenium is the theme of our roundtable
discussion this year.
We also invite proposals for informal sessions dealing
with the teaching and practice of technical and professional
communication.
Although proposals need not be based on formal research,
these sessions should reflect current research and should foster
discussion and the exchange of ideas and experiences.
Proposals in this category could take the form of individual
presentations or roundtables.

To encourage and promote research by young scholars, CATTW will provide
modest travel subsidies to graduate students who present or co-present
papers at the conference.

Presenters must be CATTW members.

Please submit 250-word proposals for presentations to the program chair
by
January 5, 2000. E-mail submissions are strongly encouraged.
