Canadian Society for the Study of Rhetoric
CALL FOR PAPERS
CSSR ANNUAL CONFERENCE
MAY 24-26, 2000
UNIVERSITY OF ALBERTA, EDMONTON, ALBERTA, CANADA

The CSSR invites proposals for its Annual Conference, to be held in
conjunction with the Canadian Humanities and Social Sciences Congress in

Edmonton, Alberta. English and French proposals in all areas of the
theory, practice, and history of rhetoric are welcomed. For scheduling
reasons, presentations should not exceed twenty minutes.

This year's conference will feature a joint session with the Canadian
Association of Teachers of Technical Writing, entitled Rhetorical
Approaches to Workplace and Academic Communication.

Under this broad theme, participants are invited to present papers that
explore the application of a rhetorical perspective to any aspect of
workplace or academic communication, whether in contemporary or
historical contexts. We invite, for example, rhetorical analyses of all

kinds of workplace or academic communication practices; historical
discussions of these practices in diverse contexts; theoretical
contributions to the study of these forms of communication; pedagogical
considerations; explorations of research questions and approaches; and
so on. These are just some of the considerations that researchers are
invited to address in an exploration of the rhetorical approaches to
workplace and academic communication.

We are also, as usual, interested in hearing from researchers and
scholars working or studying in any of the following areas:

• rhetorical theory
• rhetorical criticism
• history of rhetoric
• rhetoric in popular culture
• media communication
• rhetoric of political and social discourse
• composition theory and pedagogy
• communication pedagogy
• sociolinguistics and pedagogy
• semiotics
• professional and technical communication

Presenters must be members of the CSSR.
Proposals, limited to one single-spaced page, may be submitted no later
than January 31, 2000, to:
