One possibility for your having avoided the flu is your amantadine.
Amantadine Hydrochloride (Symmetrel) is a drug that was NOT originally
intended to treat PD symptoms. The medication was brought to market
initially for the purpose of protecting patients from certain virulent forms
of influenca virus. Needless to say, some people who took amantadine to
protect themselves against the flu also had Parkinson's disease. Soon, some
of these patients told their physicians that their PD symptoms seemed to be
improved. One of these physicians was Dr. Robert S. Schwab, a Boston
neurologist who ran a quick check on a series of his own patients, contacted
the manufacturer of the drug which then arranged for a clinical study of
amantadine in PD patients in a number of centers across the US.
Presto....we had a new drug for PD. This as back in 1969 and 1970.
