Anecdote re: cognitive awareness:

A friend's father was taken to the hospital, appearing to be
unconscious...suffering congestive heart failure as well as treatment for
colon cancer......about 85 years old....feeble, and a Hoosier's basketball
fan (Indiana University/Bobby Knight)..... mentally alert prior to an
"extremely rough evening".

The son was asked by the attending physician if they should "DNR" Rob in case
there was another "event" during the next 24 hours.............son hesitated
before answering.........apparently a few seconds longer than Rob felt was
necessary....because the "apparently unconscious" Rob had regained some
strength and answered "well, I had really planned on watching Bobby (Knight)
and those kids play on tv again tonight".

..........and he is still watching the Hoosier's play basketball......
