Alcohol is not useful in controlling the tremors seen in Parkinson's
disease. The only "tremor" disorder in which alcohol can be of benefit is in
a neurologic condition known as Essential or Benign Familial Tremor. In the
vast majority of these patients, small amounts of alcohol can temporarily
lessen the severity of the tremors. However, too much alcohol can bring
about a "rebound" effect in that the tremors tend to be more severe the day
after ingesting too much alcohol.

For most Parkinson's disease patients, small amounts of alcohol can usually
be well tolerated with the antiparkinson medications. Some doctors may even
recommend a glass of wine or cocktail before bed instead of a sleeping pill.
