Amitryptylene (Elavil) is not a sleep-inducing drug. It is a tricyclic
antidepressant. One of its side-effects (common to such drugs) is an
initial period of sedation; but this dissipates after continuous use for
several weeks (when the antidepressant effect kicks in).

Depression itself can cause loss of sleep. This may be the reason for
the improvement.
