Greetings, colleagues. UNBSJ will soon be advertising three positions, and I wanted you good people to hear about them as soon as possible. Here they are, in substance. When they are officially out, I'll add items like the date applications are due, etc. Just wanted you to start thinking about it now. (Applications not accepted yet.) The Student Services Department at the University of New Brunswick, Saint John, invites applications for two ten-month Writing Centre Consultant positions. Writing Centre Consultants teach writing one-on-one to students at all levels of ability, in the context of their writing assignments in all disciplines. They also consult with faculty, lead workshops, and speak to classes. Candidates should have a Master's Degree(PhD preferred) in a discipline where writing and communication are emphacized(Rhetoric/Composition preferred) and a minimum of two years tutoring adults in writing, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. These are full-time(36.25HPW) 10-month term positions: one from 1 July, 2000 through 30 April. 2001; the other, from 1 September, 2000 through 30 June, 2001. Both are in the Administrative, Professional and Technical employment group, with a salary range of $29,191--$36,496 per annum, pro-rated for ten months. Possibility of renewable positions upon successful completion of term. 2.The Department of Humanities and Languages at the University of New Brunswick, Saint John, invites applications for a 12-month position at the Instructor level to teach in our new Communication and Professional Writing program. We seek a candidate with a PhD in Rhetoric/Composition. Experience teaching undergraduate writing courses is a necessity. The successful candidate will teach first and second year courses in academic writing and oral communication. UNBSJ already has an established Writing Centre and now seeks to expand our writing programme. I am retiring(only because of UNB retirement age regulation--ie I have turned 65!). I had hoped that these positions would be different in terms of status, but because of the "powers that be" this is it for now. Needless to say, my "power" is limited! I will say that the Writing Centre is highly respected by faculty and students; we often have a waiting list for appointments, and we see students from a wide variety of disciplines, years of University and levels of ability. The plan as of now is--possibly by 2001-2002-- to offer a Minor/Certificate in Writing and to coordinate the Writing Centre with that programme in some way At that time the status of these jobs should become more acceptable. Although UNBSJ has all the usual problems, economic and philosophical, I think some good foundations have been laid here. I'll get more information out to you as soon as the advertisements are officially out--should be soon. Best wishes, Roberta Lee Supervisor, Writing Centre University of New Brunswick, Saint John P.O.
