TERRY FOX'S MARATHON OF HOPE REMEMBERED

WebPosted Wed Apr 12 23:28:59 2000

ST. JOHN'S-- It was on this day, 20 years ago, that Terry Fox began his
Marathon of Hope — an attempt to run across Canada to raise money for
cancer research.

Fox started the marathon in St. John's, Newfoundland. Today, the city
marked the anniversary with a ceremony. Fox's mother, Betty, spoke about
her son's heroic attempt to help others.

Terry Fox lost most of his right leg to cancer in 1977. When he started the
Marathon of Hope three years later, most Canadians had no idea who he was.
But that changed quickly.

Fox never finished his marathon. About five months after he started his
run, he had to stop. The cancer had spread to his chest. He died in 1981 at
age 22.

In the years since his death, more than $250 million has been raised in his
name for cancer research.
