The current debate over whether to provide federal funds for embryo research stems from a belief system difference regarding when human life begins. There are dozens of different views on this -- a Wayne State College student tried to summarize them all on a web page http://academic.wsc.edu/mathsci/hammer_m/beyoncjr.htm.It makes interesting reading, becauses it's a tough question. I am thankful to Senators Specter and Harkin for their stands on this matter, and I welcome the forthcoming Senate debate. I hope that public debate will provoke people to examine their personal views, especially people who have taken the matter on authority without thinking things through for themselves. For this purpose it will not be necessary to finally resolve the question of when human life begins, only to concur that an embryo in its earliest stages is not a human being.
