Hi All, Just got word this conference will be happening here in 2 weeks.. Medicare – Sustainability of the Health Care System Sustainability and Accountability in the 21st Century http://www.cma.ca/advocacy/medicare/index.htm ************************************************************************ Sustainability of the Health Care System Medicare – Sustainability and Accountability in the 21st Century For over 30 years our health care system has been an important and defining feature of what it is to be Canadian. But for the system to not only survive but thrive in the new millennium we must ensure that it is able to meet the health care needs of all Canadians. Public opinion polling indicates that Canadians are concerned about the survival of our Medicare program, and they continue to identify health care as the top priority for governments to address. Our politicians have, at last, acknowledged that Medicare is in serious jeopardy. Provincial and territorial leaders have identified the need to have a discussion about the sustainability of our health care system. But health care has now become a political football in this country, with governments of all levels pointing fingers at each other and various conflicting figures swirling about our heads. Recently there have been a number of calls for a national review of what we can deliver and what Canadians expect us to deliver. The Canadian Medical Association (CMA) in partnership with the British Columbia Medical Association (BCMA), the Health Association of British Columbia (HABC) and the Registered Nurses Association of BC (RNABC) have taken up that challenge and are sponsoring a combined conference and forum entitled "Medicare – Sustainability and Accountability in the 21st Century." The forum will include about 125 representatives from all facets of the Canadian public. It will be held in Vancouver on May 11 and 12, 2000. Guest speakers will include provincial, national and international experts on health care as well as representatives from the health care sector, labour, government, business, academic communities, the news media, and the public. Add your voice to the debate! Conference organizers want your input on the health care system and how it can be improved. Email your opinion to [log in to unmask] Your comments will be incorporated into the discussions at the Forum. What do you believe is the largest problem facing Medicare today? What is the first thing you would do to fix the system? How can we improve accountability in the system? Is sustainability of the Canadian health care system really the issue? Should Medicare extend to cover the costs of medication and home or community care? Please be sure to let us know the province in which you reside and whether you are a member of the CMA /BCMA, the HABC or the RNABC. A full report on the Forum proceedings will be posted on this Web site in the summer of 2000. Thank you for your input ************************************************************************ Think about it ............ murray [log in to unmask]
