CARNIVALESQUE CONFERENCE Saturday 20 May 2000, 10.00-4.30 Sallis Benney Theatre, University of Brighton, U.K. This conference accompanies an exhibition exploring 'the carnival sense of the world' in Western art from the Middle Ages to the present day. Academics and artists will discuss critical theories, iconographies, popular culture and contemporary art in papers and discussions which will range from the ancient world to the present day. The conference will be chaired by Professor David Alan Mellor (University of Sussex); speakers include Cesare Poppi (University of East Anglia), Malcolm Jones (University of Sheffield), Timothy Hyman (curator of the exhibition), Vanessa Toulmin (University of Sheffield), and Joanna Lowry (Kent Institute of Art and Design).
