Subject: Grassroots suggestions for PD

Suggestions:
1. There are numerous manufacturers of "getting
about" vehicles for those with a physical handicap,
e.g. recumbent bicycles, tricycles, push scooters, 3
and 4 wheel carts, neighborhood vehicles, etc. An
awareness walk could be made interesting by
contacting the manufacturers to ask them to take
part.
2. Another suggestion for a unity walk would be to
have state flags, banners, or other identification
which would make it possible to identify people
from the same area. Fun umbrellas with
identifying logos, messages is another idea. You
never know when an umbrella would come in
handy at a walk. I recently came across a
handheld stateflag and pole which compacts into
an easy to carry 10" . It is inexpensive, about $3.00.
3. Presently, I am involved in a gazebo and
landscaping project for a housing unit for the
physically challenged. Some Parkinsonians are,
no doubt, tenants in similar housing. This kind of
project could generate wide community
participation and coincidental Parkinson
awareness.
4. Previous suggestion which was both doable
and done was in Upstate NY: One of our
members was into wood craft and built 20 bluebird
boxes which were placed on the Hamilton College
Golf Course. The project had "legs" and was
newsworthy in our local media.
5. Many banks, theatres, restaurants have
electronic signs. They might be approached
during PD Awareness Month to do a PSA on their
sign stating that April is Parkinson Month and to
please support research.
These are just a few ideas which might be used to
promote PD awareness at the grassroots level.
Perhaps an even more important reason for doing
such things is to unite people in a common positive
experience. Could we get a discussion going on
this?
