MICROSOFT VS. U.S. GOVERNMENT: WHOSE ROUND IS IT ANYWAY? Fast on the heels of the Justice Department's attempt to break Microsoft up into two companies, the federal government and 17 states have accused the software giant of creating applications that work well only with Windows 2000, its new server software. And, according to the government, the directive to do so came from a July 1999 e-mail from company chairman Bill Gates, which allegedly told employees to redesign Office applications to favor devices that run on the Windows operating system -- even if it disadvantages customers who use the popular Palm Pilot. Microsoft officials said the government's portrayal of the e-mail is "completely inaccurate," adding they've received no complaints about Palm products not working with Windows or Office applications. The district court hearing the case must consider whether to accept the new evidence as part of its reasoning for breaking up the company. Microsoft is expected to submit its remedy by May 10.
