Joan, Re AFO's , I have worn an AFO for years primarily due to Polio I had as a kid and foot drop that was related to it. Since I have PD I require it more than ever (now that I am walking again!) because of shuffling my feet when I walk. I have seen a few PWP's wearing them though. They are not like in the bad ole days when they were made of metal and leather- as recently as 30 years ago I had one prescribed for me. The new ones are entirely Plastic, fit around your calf and fit in your shoe molded to the shape of your foot. The top is closed with Velcro and wraps around your calf making it hard to see and giving needed support yet some flexibility.
