I also wear AFOs on both feet, due to posterior tibial dyst\function
(tendons in ankles deteriorating).  You described mine exactly, except I
might add that there is a hinge with a spring which allows my ankles to move
up dnad down.  I have had them a little over a year now, and they do help my
walking to be nearly painfree.  Prior to getting them, my walking was
painful and very limited.  I still do not walk long distances like I used
to, and cannot use walking as an aerobic exercise.  I really miss walking,
as I walked at our mall before I went to work for several years.   Of
course, I'm not working now, either.  They are slightly ugly if I don't wear
slacks. but I figure if they keep me walking, I really don't care how they
look.
