Nando Times launches new frameless site

RALEIGH, N.C. (June 5, 2000 3:04 p.m. EDT "http://www.nandotimes.com") - The Nando Times, the online world and national news service of the McClatchy Company's Nando Media, launched a new frameless version of its Web site Monday.

The new noframes site, at "http://www.nandotimes.com/noframes/", "adds so many other products that are only reachable currently through our framed version," said Fraser Van Asch, Nando Vice President, Sales and Marketing. "This more accurately mimics the frames version in a noframes format that gives you all of those other services that are available that you can't get to off of the (old) noframes version."

The new site replaces the second version of the main Nando Times Web site, launched in the fall of 1995, as the default Nando Times noframes site.

"It's something we've meant to do for a long time," Creative Services Director Stan Gilliland said. "Because of all the other changes that have happened to Nando in the past couple of years, it's just been put off and put off and with the recent staffing-up down in graphics, we had some time and tackled it."

"The main reason we did (the redesign) was to be more consistent with the regular Nando Times without overloading the graphics. There won't be significantly more graphics than the old noframes version but it will look better, it'll be more appealing, the navigation will work better," Gilliland said.

Nando graphic designer Pete Carlton, who designed the framed version of the Nando Times at www.nandotimes.com, reworked the framed site's elements into a single frame to create the new frameless site.

The former noframes Nando Times will be retained as a text version of the site at www.nando.net/text.

"That's going to be the pared-down version that makes for ease of use, be it through a PDA device (handheld computer), a slow-dial up connection, (for) handicapped people who use a text reader -- it's going to benefit those people the most," Van Asch said. "As it moves over to a purely text-based version, all graphics and images will be stripped out ... There are very few now, but imagemap navigation and such like that will all be turned to text as well."

Nando Media is a pioneer in Web publishing and a leader in providing updated news and information. Time magazine declared that Nando "set a standard for the industry" with its three- to six-minute updates of news and information from around the world.
