Cancer society official surrenders to FBI WebPosted Sat Jun 10 14:18:01 2000 - COLUMBUS, OHIO - A top executive of the American Cancer Society accused of embezzling nearly $7 million gave himself up to FBI agents after returning from Switzerland via Canada to Ohio late Friday. Daniel Wiant, chief administrative officer of the society's Ohio division, will appear in U.S. District Court on Monday. Wiant, 35, is accused of transferring $7 million in funds to Austria under the guise that the money be used for research grants. Officials of the American Cancer Society were pleased with Wiant's work since he was hired six years ago. They did not know he had a criminal record and had served a two-year prison term in Hawaii.
