David, Xanax is not a good antidepressant. It is more of an antianxiety drug. If your depression is persistent- lasting longer than a week or 2 depending on what you are taking other-wise you may wish to try an antidepressant such as Zoloft. Be aware that there are a few cases reported in the literature of PWP'S SYMPTOMS BEING INCREASED BY ssri's (the class that Zoloft belongs to). Watch for that if you start an SSRI but don't discontinue the SSRI unless the increase in symptoms is clearly caused by the SSRI.
