Stop the Spread
The Love Bug, Killer Resume, NewLove, and Stages
viruses all hijack Windows Scripting Host, a part of
Windows that lets programs manipulate each other
without a user’s knowledge. Very few people need
Scripting Host in their day-to-day lives, according to
Richard Jacobs of the antiviral company, Sophos, and
turning it off stops computers from spreading the viruses.
In Windows 98, that means going to your Start Menu
and choosing Settings, then Control Panel. Double-click
on the Add/Remove Programs control panel. Choose the
Windows Components or Windows Setup option, and
then double-click on the Accessories option. Uncheck
the box for Windows Scripting Host, which should be the
                  last one on the list.
But the number one way to keep yourself safe,
antiviral experts agree, is to scrutinize e-mail closely.
