Hi All,
This mornings Vancouver Sun newspaper held a surprise for me.
As I scanned the weekend offerings of the Jazz Festival, my eye
caught an advertisement entitled ...

in the "single-handed" 3934 kilometre San Francisco to Hawaii

You may ask "Who is the Pacific Parkinson's Research Institute?"
It is a relatively new (1992) group headed by Canadian Senator John Nichol.
Pacific Parkinson's Research Institute's primary goal is to raise money for
research focussed on a cure for Parkinson's Disease. Senator John Nichol
is probably our strongest voice on Parliament Hill in Ottawa.

(Here is an excerpt from Health Minister Alan Rock addressing delegates to the
XIII th. International Congress on Parkinson's Disease July 1999)
Let me also take a few moments to recognize the outstanding contributions of the Honourable
John Nichol, chairman and founder of the Pacific Parkinson's Research Institute. As the driving
force behind this remarkable meeting, John Nichol has brought the spotlight of the world onto the
gathering in Vancouver this week. It’s just been seven years since the institute that John chairs
was created and in that time it has already forged a lasting legacy by raising research funds for
Parkinson’s research, increasing public awareness of the condition, and building invaluable ties
to the voluntary community.

Disease Association recognized seven officers and one companion of the
Order of Canada for contributions to Parkinson's Disease research and research
funding: Donald Calne (chair of the 13th International Congress on Parkinson's
Disease), Patrick McGeer and Edith McGeer, John Nichol (chair of the Pacific Parkinson's
Research Institute), Louis Poirier (director of the neurobiology laboratories and the

Neurodegenerative Disorders: The Neurodegenerative Disorders group has continued with a busy
clinical load in Movement Disorders, as well as an active research program. During the past
year, the Group has been successful in obtaining MRC funding for 6 projects as part of its Group
Grant, which is scheduled for review in Spring 1999. These grants cover a range of problems in
Parkinson’s Disease, including epidemiological studies, mechanisms of dyskinesias in rodent
models, PET studies in humans and non-human primates with experimental Parkinsonism, and
the benefit and mechanisms of ECT. Additional grant support to the Group has come from a
Center of Excellence grant from the National Parkinson Foundation (Miami), the BC Health
Research Foundation, the Pacific Parkinson’s Research Institute, and the NIH (via collaboration
with US PIs).
