My father's oncologist just told us that he could not recommend my dad have
surgery or even a minimally invasive laporascopic RFA (a new procedure
that has just been FDA approved for liver metastases) if he were to need it
because he says whenever you put a person with a movement disorder under
anesthesia it risks progressing it. Dad is 81 but in very good
condition.......

I am interested in anyone else who has had this experience of anesthesia
worsening movement disorders. As many of you know I am a young-onset pwp
(at age 20) just turned 40. Before the age of 20 I had a total of 6 knee
operations and since the age of onset I have had 4 other surgeries. A cyst
was removed from the back of my right calf three years ago. The procedure
was only expected to last 30-45 minutes but due to the cyst being larger
than anticipated the surgery lasted 1 1/2 hours. I thought I would never
recover from that surgery. My tremors seemed to have worsened at the time.
Over the time of recovery the tremors lessened almost as if the brain was
recovering from anesthesia. Something else that is interesting is I have a
high threshold for drugs meaning it takes a heck of a lot of anything to
work as far as relieving any pain. For instance at the dentist what would
normally take 1 shot of novacaine takes me 3-4 shots to numb. Even
orthopedic pain is extremely hard to treat. It makes it difficult because
pain increases symptoms of pd. Plus doctors are reluctant to prescibe
anything too high powered because of the pd. So what is a person to do? I
have fallen 3 times in the past two weeks from my dyskinesias knocking me
off balance. I am using my wheelchair more for fear of the possibilites of
broken bones. I have to admit I am not handling this very well. I am hard
headed but not dumb. Is it time for DBS because of dyskinesias? Any
opinion is welcome. Thanks so much for the shoulder to lean on guys knowing
I have my "pd list family" helps. Keep up the fight...we are all in this
together.
