I believe the SPECT is equivalent to the PET scan, Positron Emission Tomography.
If I recall it involves the injection of a short lived radionuclide which somehow
attaches itself to a neurotransmitter in the brain and it is tracked by external
analytical devices.
As far as I know, this is the only method currently available to provide a
laboratory test for PD, but it is still an expensive research tool used for
research only.
