The group, which includes Toshiba, Sony, NEC, Fujitsu, Hitachi, Mitsubishi, and Canon, as well as Waseda University and Toyohashi University of Technology, hopes to use Linux as a de facto industry standard, making the next generation of electronic appliances and gadgets entirely compatible, and striking a severe blow to Microsoft's hopes to gain a dominant share for its own operating software.
