JAPANESE CONSORTIUM TARGETS LINUX FOR APPLIANCES

The Japan Embedded Linux Consortium, a 23-member group that reads like a
who's who of Japan's high-tech industry, has banded together to develop a
Linux-based operating system for electronic appliances, mobile phones and
car navigation systems. The group, which includes Toshiba, Sony, NEC,
Fujitsu, Hitachi, Mitsubishi, and Canon, as well as Waseda University and
Toyohashi University of Technology, hopes to use Linux as a de facto
industry standard, making the next generation of electronic appliances and
gadgets entirely compatible, and striking a severe blow to Microsoft's
hopes to gain a dominant share for its own operating software.
