Hi All, This past week a local radio station CKNW had a Dr. HJ Roberts on their TalkShow discussing the dangers of Aspartame. Dr. H. J. ROBERTS, M.D., F.A.C.P.,F.C.C.P. has lots of letters after his name, similar to many of our neurologists in our movement disorder centres. Does he know what he's talking about? He *sounds* like he does..... Now, I'm well aware this subject has been discussed and debunked at length every few months for several years. Search the PARKINSN List archives at LISTSERV.listserv.utoronto.ca Send the following one line message. Is it a hoax? "The "Aspartame Warning" (like many hoaxes) contains some valid information, but it also contains some misleading information. It may even be argued that this warning serves a useful purpose since it may cause people to take a closer look at whether Aspartame is safe enough to consume. Having said that, I must say that I (personally) do regard it as a hoax. Why? Because the versions of the "Aspartame warning" that are clogging my mailbox all encourage the reader to warn (it carefully avoids using the word "forward") as many people as possible. The correct approach for something like this to discuss this on relevant (e.g., medical, health, biological) newsgroups. It's always a bad idea to forward information like this unless the information has been verified." and further down the page Stiller says... "I must mention that I am personally concerned about the fact that it appears to me that the certification process for Aspartame was (is) open to some question. I am concerned about the long term health aspects of consuming aspartame and don't personally consume any product that contains aspartame." "If you are interested, I encourage you to search the web on "aspartame" and draw your own conclusions. This is not a clear black and white issue; there is a lot of evidence on both sides...." This is my opinion precisely... I know some will be upset that I am bringing this subject to the for once more... Please exercise your delete key now if you feel that way... The main advocates against aspartame are Betty Martini, Dr. Roberts and his colleague Dr. Blaylock... "While MSG and aspartame are probably not causes of the neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's dementia, Parkinson's disease, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, they may well precipitate these disorders and certainly worsen their effects. It may be that many people with a propensity for developing one of these diseases would never develop a full blown disorder had it not been for their exposure to high levels of food borne excitotoxin additives." Perhaps we can get some good advice from our Registered Dietician, Kathrynne Holden. Perhaps we can get an opinion from NPF's Medical Director Dr. Lieberman .
