                                THREE OLD FRIENDS

Three old friends,
who've never met before,
joined by love, pain, and heartache
Sit and watch
a black sky lighten
to pink and orange.
Sea gulls are crying
Because there are no seas in sight
A fresh wind blowing
off a sea with no salt.
They watch a black night
bloom into a glorious new dawn
Each living with their own type of pain.
Each knowing the terrible hurt of
being surrounded by people,
and still being alone.
All three have some things in common -
an incurable disease, the joy and pain
from being a parent, and
the knowledge of how dark the night
can be when you are alone.
But just when the night seems darkest-
and the wind over the water seems as cold as their souls -
The orange globe of a new sun
rises to light their way,
just as the lighthouse they sit beside lights
the way for the ships passing.
And as it grows lighter,
they are able to see each other in dawn's early rays
and see the love in each other's faces
and realize that when you are with people who love you,
you are never, ever, alone.
