                                A Life Found

Tonight, I sit alone again
waiting to see if you show up
reading thru old letters, poems and essays
written to so many people

Pain is a common thread in so many of the missives
an old companion, who never fails to make days challenging
and nights an exercise in misery
so many broken bones, torn joints, broken cartilage

But worse than the physical pain
is the mental, knowing my body no longer obeys the mind's commands
and knowing I've been alone for so long -
Lonely in the midst of a crowd,
is the worst feeling I've ever known

The words we swore were "in sickness and in health"
but that means colds or broken bones,
something which can be fixed -
not this slow thief, robbing my body of it's grace
and not taking my mind

leaving me here, to live with the knowledge
that someday soon I will be trapped inside this hull
The body I used to be proud of,
"God's mansion" some folks say,
In this case, a crumbling ruin

And I keep reading the letters,
and begin to notice a change
a stranger came into my life
bringing smiles to ward off the pain

She says the shaking doesn't matter
Nor the frozen mask I wear
and she offers love unconditional
but my heart, so abused, was afraid to believe

A chance meeting, one brief afternoon
A vision in a hat,
sun forming a halo around her head,
and a smile so honest and friendly
with a hug, to calm my fears

meetings follow meetings
and the width of a continent
proves to be no obstacle at all
not for hearts, minds or lovers

and time runs so funny
flying when we are together
crawling when we are apart
a brief moment of sunshine
followed by months of darkness and rain

A year flies by so swiftly
and the body continues to decay
but with love given so freely
the mental pain has gone away

so many things to separate us
yet we continue to be as one
traveling across the nation
for visits so brief, yet so long

As time goes on our knowledge
of each other grows deeper, richer and fuller
and our hearts begin beating as one
bringing sunshine where rain used to fall

Now our days of pain and darkness
are coming to an end
for soon we will be together
One heart, one soul,
together,
forever.
