I too can add weight to the testimony that maggots clear up ulcerated flesh. The Burma Railway (WW2) is evidence enough. But, I caution against the assertion that 'they do not eat healthy flesh'. Ask any sheep farmer and he will tell you of the effects of Fly Blow, when the sheep is literally eaten alive by maggots. Maggots exude (secrete) digestive enzymes onto the surface they crawl on, in order to soften the tissue and make it easier to ingest. This will lead to the breakdown of healthy tissue, in time. The practice of using leeches has never died out, but it has changed. Today you will find them behind doors with titles such as Tax Office or Attorney. I know that it was ludicrous, but in a way it did work. A doctor explained it to me once. Somthing to do with shutting down the bodies ability to fight the infection, therefore reducing fever or somthing like that. Did the "science" of the time understand "how" leaches work?
