A man leaves his base camp and walks five miles due south. Then he turns to the east and walks five miles due east. Then he turns and walks five miles directly north where he arrives at his base camp and finds a bear eating his supplies. What color is the bear? Think. People have been discussing magnets. . . . . Magnets are unusual in that a magnet has a magnetic field. . . . Did you detect the strange walking pattern that got the man back to his base camp? Where is the only place in the world that the man would come back to his starting point by walking this way? He can't??? Sure he can. If his base camp is at the North Pole. What is the only kind of bear in this area? And what color is a polar bear? Yes! You are right! The bear is WHITE ! ! ! (Remember this is an old Cub Scout riddle. If you are well-versed in map reading, you know about the magnetic north, of course. And polar bears are not true white. And camping on the ice may be risky. The riddle is a good one for nine year olds, though. The riddle has been around for many decades.) I read all your notes on the ListServe. Thanx. Pat
