WOMEN OUTNUMBER MEN ON THE NET A new survey by Media Metrix and Jupiter Communications indicates that the number of women on the Internet now exceeds that of men, boosted by a 125% rise in teenage (12- to 17-year old) girl users during the past year. The only age group among women that declined was the next step up -- 18- to 24-year-olds. The study found that, not surprisingly, teens' use of the Web focused on teen fashions, shopping and music. Meanwhile, women in Europe are more likely to use the Web for targeted research, particularly in retail, career and travel, rather than surfing among many different Web sites. And although the U.S. had the highest percentage (50.4%) of women online, Sweden came in second with women making up 44% of its online population, followed by the U.K. with 35%. The fastest growing online population of women in Europe was Germany, which is averaging a 4% annual increase.
