Chuck it is the same with any one that altitude affects one's body and it is not unusual for hands or feet to swell given altitude increase. The higher one goes the worse it becomes which can include headaches as well if one is sensitive to altitudes above a mile high. I have seen hikers have terrible headaches at 8000 ft and I swell in my hands at that altitude hiking.
