We have at Memorial a two-course sequence, the first a literature with composition (45 per class), the second a choice: fiction, drama, poetry (with emphasis on writing) or a writing course (kept at 30, though the others may go to 45). Only four regular faculty offer to teach the writing course, so graduates students are pressed into service, usually without any interest or experience in this kind of teaching, and many students wishing to take it have to take one of the others.
