Hi John:

As you know, only the English Department's half-course, Effective Writing -- some students call it "ineffective writing" -- serves first year students directly in Arts and Science at UT. Section size is about 25. Most of the people teaching it have no training or expertise in teaching writing.

The Professional Writing Program has no first year courses, and classes are capped 30 or 35, depending on the course. As you know, Professional Writing hires only experienced and knowledgeable faculty.

Is there any hope for getting the Brock writing program severed from the English Department? That's what I think needs to happen.

The best to you and good luck with your struggles.
